My Worst Day Full Time RVing…But The Best Night

bad-hair-day

My day RVing was bad...but maybe not as bad as this kid

I had the worst day so far RVing full time.

The Morning

First thing in the morning the toilet flooded. Somehow toilet paper got stuck in the toilet and it overflowed all over the floor and into my room too!

I know it sounds funny but it is not! Dad was very upset and we had to squeeze the water out of the carpet with all the clean towels. It was not fun!

Then, me and Alex also got into an argument about something. And its not pretty when we argue! I was very upset.

The Afternoon

Then Mom, Alex and I went to Jewel Cave and it was closed!

Meanwhile, Dad was back at the RV working and it started to rain really hard. Then there was a huge flood in the kitchen because the rain was coming down sideways. Dad had to plug the hole in the side of the RV.

It took him an hour to fix it…

After that we went to Wind Cave and had to rush through the tour so we could get to the Allen Ranch in time for our overnight camping with some friends we met while RVing full time.

We had arranged to go horseback riding through a canyon and then to camp out under the stars over night at a real ranch.  We were so excited for this camp out!

When we went got to the ranch, it was raining, lightning and hailing so hard that the horseback riding (and the camp out) was canceled!

I didn’t like it and we all felt terribly disappointed.

Dad had a bad day too because when you live in an RV full time, you have to work really fast because you’re not sure when you’ll get another chance with all us kids around.

So when us kids came home, he was sad too. I know he missed us but he was trying to work and that didn’t happen as soon as we got home.

Night And The Full Time RV Turn Aroud!

However, on the drive  home we saw eight huge rainbows. This is just one of them:

The rainbow we saw in front of the Crazy Horse Memorial..can you see the memorial?

It was then that we decided that we would go food shopping, get a great dinner (steak – my favorite!) for a cook out  and make lemonade out of lemons!

When we got finally got home with all the fixings for a great dinner,  I started to cry because I felt bad because I missed home (friends please ask).

sad

Knowing that I felt badly, my brother Alex built an awesome tent in our room as well as he built an awesome Beyblade kit just for me!  It was so comfortable in the tent, thanks Alex!

I even read the Vipers Nest (39clues) on our Kindle.

Then Alex and I made a campfire and cooked dinner. We even made campfire potatoes and asparagus which were delicious.

Its nice to know that when I have a bad day, I am lucky to have a family to cheer me up!

Eli I love how you turned it around. Your brother is quite a kid! i once had a bad day that started like this: I stubbed my toe and broke my toenail getting out of bed, cut myself shaving which wouldnt stop bleeding, my toilet overflowed too like you, my car wouldnt start…that was just the morning.

After I stomped around for 15 minutes, I just started laughing even though I was 30 minutes late for work.

It happens! But what you do to turn it around is what makes all the difference. You did a great job doing just that!

Often times when Unca Don and I have a bad day or are upset about something that has happened, we think of his sister Lyn. As you probably know she has cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheel chair.

We realize that whatever we are going through it doesn’t come close to the challenges she has faced in her life.

Also we sing the song “sunshine and lollipops”……because you know that humor always gets you through tough times.

    Love You All….

    ps…

tell dad he may have to invest in a small shop vac…just in case!

Eli says: I like the way you deal with bad days. I will keep that in mind the next time because yes I am fortunate to be healthy even though it’s hard sometimes to be thankful for that. I’ll tell Dad to get a shop vac too! Thanks for the advice and for sharing. -Eli

  3. Eli, I am very proud to “know” you and your brother Alex! The two of you really represent American Kids and how good and polite and thoughtful they are. The television seems to show only kids who don’t mind their parents or respect them, and that’s not how most kids really are. When you have a bad day or miss your friends, and even adults do, remember that you are setting such a good example for others. Not just kids, but adults!

Mom and Dad, you’re doing a wonderful job with these two boys…future leaders!

Eli says: Thank you very much Connie for your comment! I try my best to do the right stuff even if it’s hard sometimes. Dad says that he is trying his best to help me grow up and become a leader myself. We thank you for your reading our blog! Eli

Oh, Eli. I not only loved the story of your day, I LOVED the way you wrote it. If it weren’t for this trip, I wouldn’t know what a great writer you are!! So you got me thinking what I do when I have a really bad day, and what always makes me feel better is to call someone I love and tell them all about what happened. That usually ends up being my Mom, or Richie, but for you it might be someone else (lucky you, you live with your Mom so you don’t have to call her). They always make me feel better somehow. I can always count on them. One other thing I do is to lay down on the floor with Lucy and let her lick my face. I don’t know why, but that always makes me feel better too! It sounds like you are having so many wonderful experiences. I can only tell you that when you think back on this trip, you will mostly remember the GOOD days.

    Love,
    Laurie

Eli whenever I am sad or just having a bad day I just play sports. One day I had a bad cold and my parents made me go to school. At school I realized I forgot my homework. In Science class I got a 70% on a test. After school I just felt down and that I just wanted to be alone.
When I got home I remembered I had hockey. At practice I got all my negative energy out. Eli I do not no how you delt with all that because your bad day was alot worse than mine. Your brother Alex definitely came to the rescue. I cant wait to see you guys in Wyoming it is going to be a blast.

    Love,
    Jack

Having my family to lean on always makes my day better…love and miss you guys:)

  8. MissyO says:

Wow Eli, What a rough day (for your Dad too!) But, you have the right attitude that there can be a rainbow (or 8 of them!) to make a bad situation better. And, there’s that saying, “when life gives you lemons make lemonade”, and you did that too!! The steak probably helped too 🙂
When I have a bad day I remember things could always be worse and I remind myself I’m blessed with a great family and fabulous friends!
Hope you don’t have too many days like that one Eli!
    Love,

Eli says: Yes it was a bad day but the end is always good if you have people to cheer you up. Thanks for your comment Strongest Man!

  11. Eli,

I love your description of a bad day. You did have one for sure and so did Dad. I am glad everyday is not like that. I have read the blog and thoughts off and on, I am so impressed with your writing. Your accounting is outstanding. What an important job you have? Maybe one other way to to save is to check online for coupons for the restaurants you want to go to or the museums.

You are doing a great job, Keep it up and I can not wait to hear your next adventure. Sue

    • Eli says:

Hi Sue that is a great idea, I think I should do that but every time I get on the computer I want to play Angry Birds hahaha. Thank you for your comment, I miss you, Eli

  12. Marie Friedrichsen says:

Hi Jen, Ralph, Alex, & Eli,

Are you still “On the Road” or back here on Cape Cod?? Can’t keep track of you. Heard you were going to Africa sometime soon.???

Fred and I are going to the Bourne Library tonight for a class on using data bases and other topics, including ancestry. Doubt if it will be Italian ancestry BUT we may learn something.
    Love to all, Marie

    • Ralph says:

Hi Marie! Jen is the expert on ancestry.com so make sure you corner her, shes been working hard to get the Italian heritage all sorted out.

We did go to Africa, the kids are working on an EPIC Africa post to put up on the blog here so stay tuned! It was awesome. Amazing experience.

Say hello to Fred for us!
